suckerPUNCH: describe your project.
guy SARGENT: the project what lies beneath the surface began in june 2006, it examines both landscape & architecture and is constantly evolving. i have no idea how long it will run as i can’t see an end to it at the moment. as it has progressed it has become obvious that it is influenced and informed primarily by history and it’s affect on my life. there is a timeline through it all where moments in history start to link up.
sP: who or what influenced this project?
take periods of european history when figures such as mozart, turner, goethe and napoleon were all alive, living in the same period. my work is a reflection of memories of the past and the people that formed it, the places they inhabited, worked in… and the images they evoke or created.
gS: painting, history
sP: what were you reading/listening to/watching while developing this project?
gS: lately i have been listening to quadrophenia by “the who” or mozart’s “the marriage of figaro”.
sP: whose work is currently on your radar?
gS: i recently saw a painting titled “the mill” by rembrandt… a true masterpiece
