simple sketches done with a bic ‘fine’ morph into the dense, layered work of artist russ mills. mills scans his sketches into the computer only for them to be regurgitated back onto large canvas and then hand-altered again. through this feedback between the analog and the digital, his portraits fade from sharp detail to pixelated patterns and ink blots. the collision of realism and abstraction in combination with a strategic use of color gives the works a cohesion within their multiple variations.
