DAVIDCLOVERS and c.e.b. REAS: mass no.04 is one of a series of seven speculative houses designed by the architectural firm davidclovers with artist c.e.b. reas. the comprehensive project titled 07 masses sets out to produce a system for developing speculative homes that embrace the sensorial aspects of living. using form, texture, live/work programs, artificial and natural light each mass explores specific moods and sensations inside and out.

the sectional model of mass no.04 serves simultaneously as a prototype for various aspects of design, fabrication and construction. it represents a more hybridized mass where the 2000 sf studio and 2000 sf living spaces mingle and mix in the cantilevered region. the cladding – representing formed 2ftx2ft corian solid surface (plastic) panels, backlit with led lights – is made from corian and serves as a test bed for studying the incorporation of window casings, structural, environmental and framing systems.
the collaboration between reas and davidclovers was concentrated through a series of unfolded elevations of each mass focusing on how multiple systems can integrate, appear and disappear – a quality inferred from reas’ previous work with processing and explored materially and architecturally in all seven masses.
davidclovers continues to explore possibilities for the development and construction of 07 masses.
