suckerPUNCH: describe your project.
jovan RODRIGUEZ YAPUR: before the advent of the print, books were a rare item only privileged to royalty, aristocracy and the clergy. this lack of information fueled the emergence of monumental cathedrals overloaded with visceral imagery to spread its sacred message. as the technology of printed books become obsolete and media starts to take on new forms of organizing and communicating, the public library, as we know it, will undergo a dramatic transformation. a return to this monumentality of space will be founded in the newly sacred typology of the public library.
with the advent of digital technology, proximities continue to collapse and the need to physically engage with the world continues to become ambiguous. the traditional sense of informational order has collapsed to the point that a new order of global free-floating information is becoming a cultural reality. the usual approach to designing buildings strictly with economy of square footage and rigid utility is becoming obsolete. as typical programmatic requirements fall away, new freedoms arise that make monumentality as a physical representation of the information not only possible but also a requirement.
this shift will elaborate and celebrate the achievements of technology and emphasize the significance of our global society. in this context the library will reinvent itself as a public institution, a civic center, and as a global node in our community.
the focus of this thesis is to propose a monumental urban node that is not only a building but also an infrastructural armature, allowing the library to be embedded into the urban fabric and create possible interactions with a new order of society. the monumentality is elaborated with topological articulations and robust symmetry. the complexity is deployed from the belly of the
project to create depth and imagery throughout the space as well as engendering pockets of new programmatic possibility.
