suckerPUNCH: describe your project.
lucy McRAE: For two years I have been experimenting with the idea of intangible textiles made form liquid vapor or air. I started off playing with standard garden hose systems and then upgraded to importing industrial air conditioning parts from China. It was during this experimentation that I saw liquid and air bubbles travelling through transparent tubes, I had no intention of making something with tubes, but this visual opportunity was too good not to pursue.
I met Robyn through doing a talk at Hyper Island. We first met on Skype. She talked about the expression of raw human emotion, coexisting within a digital world and that technology is our new feathers, our face paint, our punk, the way we signal to each other our needs and who we are. The hairs on my neck stood on end, it was clear we were coming from the same perspective, I was hooked. I showed Robyn the tests I had made with the tubes in my studio, she banged on about them to her record label and we finally used them for her Indestructible video!
sP: whose work is currently on your radar?
lM: For six weeks nonstop during March and April 2011 ROJO Nova (David Quiles Guilló) is taking over two venues simultaneously in Rio and presenting live collaborated “work-in-progress” processes by more than 140 selected artists from around the world, featuring live music & audiovisuals; live performances, video screenings, outdoor art installations, round tables, experimental gastronomy, artist presentations, and many unpredictable social consequences. Serious art fun. Only for the happy, the gifted, the curious and the open minded. My favorites are coming Quayola, B.Fleischmann, Gabriel Dawe, Isaac Niemand, Kate MccGwire and unfortunately NOT Kit Webster, but check him out, Epic audio visual extravaganza!!
