    suckerPUNCH: describe your project.

melina a. GIRARDI: small airport terminal for riga, estonia, based on the typology of the hypostyle hall.

throughout the history of architecture, this typology was depending on a regular grid – we were interested in investigating new possibilities through blurring this grid and emphasizing the difference between regular and irregular.
the architectural concept is to build space by varying simple vertical elements and their position in space, avoiding surfaces to enclose rooms.

this lead to the idea of defining rooms and halls as void spaces enclosed by a cloud of sticks.

the position of a stick in space is defined by its end points: the point that touches a void space snaps to a regular grid. the other point is arranged according to the blurred out grid on the floor or ceiling that it connects to.
this creates an interesting effect while passing through the building: depending on your point of view, you perceive it either as a regular arrangement or a blurry cloud.

we used the concept of tensegrity to create a smart structural system that allows for the incorporation of our design idea without distracting from our main focus: creating rooms with a calm atmosphere versus vast open halls that let the visitors experience the constant gradient between regular and irregular.
