suckerPUNCH: Describe your project.
john CLARK + jake GAY + taka SHINOMOTO: This is a project conceived during Sean Lally’s 3rd Year Graduate Research Studio at UIC. The Kaohsiung Maritime Pop Music Center competition brief asks for a project that satisfies a market projection for the music industry. It solicits a huge volume of production and performance venues spanning all breadth of scales and all in the same place, all in support of the current generation of pop music. We think this is a doomed premise.
The current generation of pop might be able to be created in a laboratory but the next generation cannot be made this way. To foster new pop sensations the project must both maintain the current pop model and supplement it with elements of a grassroots model.
Our scheme aims to bring the two into a feedback connection with each other for the mutual aid of both. With potential artistic production that cannot be predetermined by either model the system has the potential to redefine pop cultural relationships.
Formally the project is manifested through a field of miniature program blocks that act as mechanical poche for the inflatable pliable poche of the connected balloons. These balloons are inhabited by all the flexible program spaces such as recording studios, cafes, and exhibits. When the balloons inflate toward and kiss each other new communities are created in the the wake of the sound, heat, and visual glimpses that they leak. During festival season they inflate to form the canopies of the stages at a monumental urban scale that echoes the static masses of the city.
