juan francisco SALDARRIAGA & farzin LOTFI-JAM: sadic(t)ropisms—or the intransigent pursuit of the sublime

Stellavista inhabits the space between terrestrial and extra-terrestrial existence. Pressed by an extreme atmosphere, this scenario is in a constant state of renegotiation. It is an extreme, primal and nebulous public arena. An archive of dynamic patterns, behaviors and uses. It is a changing memory.

    amsterdam THE NETHERLANDS

United Nude, January 2012—Among members of the fashion world, Iris van Herpen is known for pushing the boundaries of Haute Couture. On January 23rd she showed for the second time as an official guest of the Chambre Syndicale de la Haute Couture in Paris, and once again wowed the audience.

Models stepped out in “Fang” shoes with ten sharp teeth to each foot—the product of van Herpen’s fifth successful collaboration with United Nude. The shape of the wedge is so complex that each one consists of fiberglass and carbon fiber, made in a slow molding process. It is not yet certain whether these shoes will come to market as a limited edition, as was the case with previous Iris van Herpen x United Nude designs, but it is worth keeping an eye out for them.

  • Mechanical Garden
    cambridge MASSACHUSETTS

Ibañez Kim Studio (Mariana Ibañez and Simon Kim) proposes a Mechanical Garden that enjoyed a unique partnership with artists and engineers in Philadelphia.

The Mechanical Garden is a social stage for PS1 activities as well as for architecture-as-characters. A strong figural demarcation assembles a series of Characters into generously shaded arcades and walkways. This peripheral organization reinforces the existing geometries of the courtyard walls, but thickens them with canopy and programme – to allow for indeterminacy and found situations. Each Character is constructed from similar elements in fixed modules, but have differentiation in traits and features. They vary in orientation, internal spaces and function.

  • Project BlackBox
    calgary CANADA

Project BlackBox is addressing the issue of responsiveness at the building scale by creating smart surfaces that actuate without the use of electricity. The systems and behaviors are designed at a chemical level as smart materials that actuate in response to a specific temperature. To achieve this, fundamental shifts were made in the relationship between material scientists and designers, creating an environment of design and prototyping within an engineering laboratory.

    suckerPUNCH: Describe your project.

jonas ERSSON: The project represents the culmination of a series of individual workshops conducted within the framework of the bachelor-course “Architecture Space and Technology” in the spring of 2011 at the Lund University School of Architecture.

The idea of an interchangeable architecture has been a driving force behind many of the experimental movements during the 20th century. In my scheme I revisited some of the ideas of the metabolist and structuralist movements but tried to reevaluate the basic premise. Unlike the metabolist idea of wear and tear, I envisioned a system that instead of constantly being replaced would allow a systematic reconfiguration to suit changing needs.

  • Synesthesia Pharmahuasca
    new york NEW YORK

    sP: Describe your project.

jennifer CHANG & belén GÁNDARA: As an escape from the vertical city, we construct an extension of the synesthetic minds, a literal imitation of a hallucinogen reality. We remap consciousness to break the notion between awareness and
delirium. The result is a parallel city of chambers where ayahuasca is both produced and consumed. The barrier between the mental and physical realities is blurred in these chambers by creating a continuity of the mind. In a continuous feedback loop of humans, machines, and their realities, it is no longer clear if the environment is producing an image of the mind, or if the mind is producing an image of the environment.
