suckerPUNCH: Describe your project.
francisco BARRON: Architecture is facing a crisis; its identity is a mist. Its obligation to the social, cultural, and political aspects of humanity are at stake. Architectures influence on the community is unavoidable, and its presence can always be questionable. Architecture is being shaped by numerous processes- some that often fall short due to insubstantial aesthetic, geometrical, and intellectual integrities.
Vernon, California is an industrial city with what might be perceived as a negative image. Undisputedly its identity is considered ugly, un-inhabitable, and an appendage to a major city, Los Angeles.
This proposed Skyscraper re-defines the use of extrusion as a design procedure, overlooking its weakness in simplicity, and establishing an architectural basis for methodologies and analog for a tower that can re-image the city of Vernon. The surrounding context becomes part of the interplay in the imagery, rather than avoid it; it aspires to reflect its blemishes by the use of an architectural cosmetic that allows the inhabitant in the tower to connect with the surrounding community.
The Tower is stripped to its bare minimum- its skeleton. And, allows the architectural cosmetic to dominate its physical appearance. The edges of the context become part of the edges of the curvature. The colors of the context become part of the buildings intense coloration in its cosmetic- picking up its pigment and saturation. The curvature of the tower stays true to its generative analog of blending, forming, deforming, offsetting, nesting, and extruding as to create ease and flex. In this way, the boundaries between the architectural elements in the tower are blurred creating a smooth and fluid continuation from exterior to interior. Creating no abrupt difference or boundaries. The act of blending empowers the simplicity of offsetting, nesting, and extruding into a sensual behavior. As context and Architecture merge, both perform together and reflect with its natural environment the everyday life- the life of the community.
The image of Vernon is born.
