suckerPUNCH: Describe your project.
MegaZoo: melody REES and arthur AZOULAI: Project Location: San Juan, Puerto Rico.
This project is a morphological study based on self-organizing biological systems. At its pure essence, it is a topological surface that links infrastructure, ecology, and architecture to articulate a new and unworldly environment. As the continuous surface bifurcates it creates a network of flowing circulation paths for pedestrians, trams and cars in addition to ebbing interior pavilion spaces, temporary food markets, pop-up retail shops, time-share housing and, finally, outdoor landscapes and parks.
With a temporal and ephemeral program, the project becomes an alternative to traditional commerce space and allows the local culture of the city to become active. Correspondingly, the adaptive qualities of the infrastructure allow the building and site to form an organic semiotic relationship where the building seamlessly emerges from the land below. Here, the ecologically evasive character of Puerto Rico’s environment merges into the new architecture. Thus, this project expresses new formal relationships and interstitial space while also reflecting the contingencies of the current moment in San Juan, Puerto Rico.
