    suckerPUNCH: Describe your project.

craig CHAMBERLAIN, victor SMITH, madelynn RINGO: Translations (a workshop series hosted by Kyle Miller, Assistant Professor of Architecture at the University of Kentucky, College of Design).

“Translations” is a series of lectures and workshops organized around the concept of employing multiple modes of making, a diverse set of design techniques and mixed media within the architectural design process. Multiplication and hybridity of making ensures a cyclical design process in which concepts are translated from state to state, opening the possibility for interpretation, intuition, and innovation within the process of architectural design.

The course reflects on the possibilities associated with producing sophisticated architectural concepts and potent architectural design proposals through carefully considered blending of analog techniques of drawing and making with complex digital design software and relevant digital fabrication resources.

    “Workshop” with Clark Thenhaus

Alchemic drawings are made by mixing various inks with water on mylar. The drawings deny gridded or linear systems in favor of the interaction of effects producing unforeseen organizations, color palettes, and effects requiring sensing over deciphering. These analogue drawings are captured as images to be documented and manipulated using various digital tools. Through pivoting back and forth between various digital programs, the drawings developed a complexity to translate and reveal new information and ideas. By implementing Grasshopper, digital tracings of the ink on mylar were used to create the structure for a topography which was realized using CNC milling to create a translation from the analog drawing, to a digital interpretation and finally to a physical model.
