    Architectural Association
    London, UK
    23 July – 05 August 2012

AA DLab experiments thoroughly on the possibilities of digital design tools and rapid prototyping techniques as highly integrated systems of design development. It is an intensive computation and fabrication oriented workshop that is structured around a general theme in each consecutive edition.

Starting from 2012, DLab will be launched as a series where one of the most potent vehicles for emphasis in architecture, color, will take a twist and exist beyond the field of visual compositions and sensations, becoming the common denominator for the generation of diverse computational proposals.

    suckerPUNCH: Describe your project.

    g. eddie GUIDRY: The scrapes series is an exploration of shape and form that could be viewed as architectural but are mostly otherworldly. I try to only start with a vague vision and let the drawing form itself and me. I draw using 2mm leads and color pencil.

    suckerPUNCH: Describe your project.

jessica DOVLETIAN & wenny HSU: Manifold Masses: Kaohsiung Port Terminal, Taiwan. This project investigates formal internal orders of architecture, specifically saddle polyhedral and their potential for generating intensive massing and figural interstices. We were interested in a rigorous and playful examination of these systems and their capacity to generate new forms and spatial expressions that are themselves embedded within a deep underlying order.

nick ERVINCK: Whoever studies Ervinck’s work is constantly torn between two worlds, virtual and physical. As an artist he refuse to close himself in one of the two worlds. This hybrid zone between therefore remains the ultimate playground for his imagination, a place where art and technology come together in a kind of monstrous beauty.

In an environment incongruent to facilitated human habitation, questions can be raised about the functionality of living in the remoteness of the Australian outback. How would man navigate this hostile terrain? How would research be conducted in a landscape filled with potential hazards?

emmy MARUTA: This thesis seeks “twoness” through defining notions of soft and hard. The “Soft” and “Hard” can vary characteristically from the visible to invisible. The intimate friction between the two mediums produces twoness that creates an environment that extends beyond the surface.

It is constantly being emphasized and has equivocal meaning freeing you from demands and fixed norms. Its seductive character, as opposed to nobleness or wisdom, doesn’t provide with one diagnosed path. This is never-ending process is close to corrosion which intensifies new demands and multiplies its quantity.

    suckerPUNCH: Describe your project.

yiannos VROUSGOS / Input Creative Studio: The design for ES expands on elements implemented in the store’s predecessor. The juxtaposition of natural elements versus manmade materials, references the concept of an abandoned factory that is consumed by nature. An ivy wall pays homage to the original store and demonstrates the harmonious impact of nature taking over a manmade environment. Custom murano glass chandeliers also play upon the contrast of man versus nature.
