suckerPUNCH: Describe your project.
david REEVES: For the speculative development of several temporary large-scale pavilion structures at London’s Olympic Park, the project sets out to leverage the organizational potential of distributed intelligence. Treating the existing site as a field of nodal destinations, the pavilions are collectively conceived of as an interstitial tissue—materializing along potential high traffic routes between venues.
The morphological development of this network borrows from a biological phenomenon known as Chemotaxis—the characteristic movement of an organism or cell along a chemical concentration gradient either toward or away from the chemical stimulus. In the case of many social organisms chemotaxis acts as a mechanism of indirect coordination whereby individuals communicate by locally modifying the chemical composition of their mutual environment.
This principle serves as the basis of low-level interaction in the development a bottom-up architectural model. Design focus is placed on critical feedback mechanisms between a population of autonomous agents and their shared environment. As agents travel between venues within model space, they contribute to the chemical cloud while simultaneously following local gradients tending towards regions of high concentration. In this way, popular routes between venues reinforce themselves while the more obscure ones die off resulting in a variety of pseudo-minimal configurations. The architectural proposal becomes a self-organized implicit space of ecological interaction—a spatial manifestation of collective chemical gradients.
