suckerPUNCH: Describe your project.
adam ONULOV: urban (de)resolution is rooted in the following question: why do we do things we hate? Consumer culture is everywhere and everything we have become. Our urban landscapes have become generic non-places; our public realm is nothing more than the residue of commercial culture—the junkspace that is remaining after the culture industry was allowed to run amok. The social contract is usurped by a perfectly instrumentalized mechanism of brand obedience.
As such, our experiences have become manufactured and predictable—our relationships are mediated by ubiquitous network technology and as a result, have transformed the traditional understanding of public space and human interaction. Our public realm is in a state of decay.
Aimless engagement with the aforementioned mechanisms is futile. This design exploration is about inducing moments of connectivity and consciousness with and within the built environment—not by detaching ourselves from the mechanisms of the culture industry, but by embracing them. Through techniques of identity design (branding), recombinant design and programmatic hybridization, the intent of this project, urban (de)resolution, is to synthesize a critical urban framework with the hope of creating a rejuvenated awareness and engagement with our public realm. Urban (de)resolution questions the modes of apprehending the world, which become characterized by intense moments of being part of it, rather than outside looking in (or, as we have become guilty of, not looking at all).
