  • Off With Their Heads! Decapitating Atlanta's Post-Modern Tops

    suckerPUNCH: Describe your project.

Jennifer LEWIS: “Off With Their Heads! Decapitating Atlanta’s Post-Modern Tops.” How can we imagine a new urbanism in Atlanta? Currently the skyline is dominated by exclusive post-modern capped skyscrapers with a failed aim to distinguish themselves and promote an identity for the city. “Off With Their Heads!” is a drastic snipping of the post-modern tops across the city beginning in Midtown. New nonexclusive public spaces will occupy the top floors and allow tourists and native Atlantans to regain control of the city’s skyline.

  • Bu-Hi Gift Shop: A Collection of Curious Propinquities
    atlanta GEORGIA

critic: Jennifer BONNER (TVS Ventulett Critic)

    suckerPUNCH: Describe your project.

Annie McCARTHY: “Bu-Hi Gift Shop: A Collection of Curious Propinquities.” Atlanta’s Neo-Suburban strip and cultural mecca, Buford Highway, serves as the inspiration and logic for the world’s largest gift shop. Buford Highway is a suburban palimpsest of burger joints and Chinese restaurants; fast food and Korean jewelry stores; single family homes and hotel staffing agencies. The patterns of use and culture are not at all homogeneous along this stretch of seven lane roadway, and it is the lack of similitude that defines curious propinquities. Propinquities are most distinctly manifested in the iconic strip mall.

Generative processing works, realized using (2-3mm) wood engraving via laser. 50 x 80 cm. Ongoing project.

Holger LIPPMANN: The fractalScape and NoiseScape series are based on Processing code and work with Perlin noise and iteration functions. The iteration algorithm divides a shape down within a 7-9 level loop. Each repetition of the process is also called an “iteration.” The results of one iteration are used as starting point for the next iteration.

Cynthia OCAMPO SMITH: The premise of the studio is to catalogue and investigate Dirty South “icons” that will be used to compose an unconventional guidebook of Atlanta. These work samples are of the world’s first Scent Depot: a collection of Atlanta’s geography of smells. The collection is stored within a parasitic addition to the architecturally significant Marcel Breuer library located in downtown Atlanta.

    suckerPUNCH: Describe your project.

Feyrouz ASHOURA: The “Breathtakers” is a hypothetical story about the evolution of the human anatomy. We are stuck between two eras, a time where the human kind has come to face one of the biggest changes of its history. As I am very inspired by the human being and the structure of our body itself, I constantly am in a pursuit of converting the ugliness I can recognize in humans to a so far undiscovered beauty. The whole idea behind this project was built all around the respiratory system, while I imagined it would undergo a mutation to follow the need to breathe under water by pushing our anatomy to another extent of our development, a transition between two kinds—the fusion triggered by the terrestrial and the underwater world that blooms into a newborn species.

Architects, from Gaudi to Frei Otto, have used physical processes as an aid to find forms. Because simulations of evolution are classified as search algorithms in computer science, they have become the latest find-forming device. Renown Deleuzian scholar and philosopher of technology Manuel DeLanda presents his second lecture expanding on ideas from his book Philosophy and Simulation: The Emergence of Synthetic Reason (Continuum / Bloomsbury Publishing). Copies of the book will be available.

    munich GERMANY

The world premiere of the BMW i3 Concept Coupe sees the BMW Group unveil a particularly nimble and emotive version of its concept for sustainable premium-class motoring with zero local emissions. The study presented at the 2012 Los Angeles Auto Show has been brought out in parallel to the ongoing development process for getting the first ever all-electric model from the BMW i brand ready for series production, and demonstrates the potential for conceivably extending the model range. The state-of-the-art, clean-cut and open design showcased by the BMW i3 Concept Coupe represents a pioneering form of urban mobility that makes sustainability awareness an intrinsic part of the premium profile. Beyond this, the three-door model employs the design idiom that has been created especially for the BMW i cars to convey an undeniable sense of dynamism and driving pleasure.

  • Informed Form
    los angeles CALIFORNIA

“Informed Form” is an ongoing research initiative that explores the relevance of form as a product of reciprocity between geometry (form), force (performance), matter (organization), and craft (fabrication). It extends the design research legacies of analogue form finding in the works of Otto, Gaudi, Isler, and Candela by exploring digital and analogue techniques for discovering form through variable material and geometric organizations and force simulations, while simultaneously considering the design opportunities being afforded by advances in computation and fabrication technologies.
