suckerPUNCH: Describe your project.
Daniel REIST & Valcu HORATIU: The project “Peak ‘Eye'” was awarded 2nd prize at the Think Space Unconference 2012 in Zagreb, Croatia. Adrian Lahoud operated as guest curator, and he decided to create a special cycle of competitions.
This cycle of competitions aimed to hold a mirror to the architecture discipline to reflect the changes of the last 30 years by revisiting three competitions that radically transformed architectural culture: “The Peak” (1982), “Yokohama Port Terminal” (1994) and “Blur Building” (1999).
All three winning entries emerged under unique conditions to take up critical positions on the predominant tendencies of their time. Though they each have radically different ambitions, these three projects continue to reverberate throughout contemporary architectural culture in some way, introducing new attitudes to the ground, surface and atmosphere.
This proposal for the Peak “Eye” is, first of all, breaking the competition rules. To achieve the aesthetic of a conceptual and contemporary solution, the project questions the given boundaries of the 1982 peak competition. The Peak “Eye” is a reflection of Hong Kong’s city character. All residential parts are integrated into an hybrid tower complex to interweave with programs more open to the public. The project provides all programs described in the brief, while introducing a new one: a moving gourmet restaurant that should combine qualities of high-class cuisine from both east and west. The guests of this restaurant would not only enjoy culinary specialties, but they would also experience Hong Kong in an totally unique way. As a guest, one would enjoy a four hour journey through state of the art cuisine celebrating Hong Kong’s skyline.
The cuisine makes up twenty percent of the restaurant, the rest is atmosphere — Paul Bocuse
