    suckerPUNCH: Describe your project.

Brian RICHTER: In recent years Lexington, Kentucky has become an increasingly unique mid-size urban center with incredible cultural, social and economic potential. Much of this potential may be attributed to Lexington’s youth and leadership, who are responsible for initiating many of the proposed city projects that have the ability to build Lexington as a regional urban model.

Surrounded by many important public and private institutions and businesses such as the University of Kentucky and the Coldstream Business and Research campus, Lexington has the intellectual capacity to attract new businesses that may take advantage of the existing and proposed cultural, social and urban infrastructure.

This project aims to expand upon Lexington’s proposed projects, including the SCAPE Town Branch Park System, Space Group’s Rupp Arena expansion, Centerpointe, Downtown Theater District and the Sasaki Master plan for the University of Kentucky to create a stronger connection between the urban center of downtown and the University of Kentucky. The many diverse urban conditions and historic districts found in Lexington provide a dynamic opportunity to combine existing business and research initiatives with the University of Kentucky while enhancing the public infrastructure of the city.

The design strategy implements techniques of layering and transparency paired with programmatic adjacencies to promote research innovation and public involvement in downtown Lexington. The concept of doubling distorts the boundary between public, semi-private and private programs while creating a dynamic extension of the proposed Town Branch Park System.
