suckerPUNCH: Describe your project.
TheeAe LTD. (architect Woohyun CHO): We believe change or newness is not a creation solely from nothing, but rather an evolution from the past. Designing a cultural center was a task to reveal what could be the image of contemporary Taiwanese architecture. A cultural center is as good a place as any to express the identity of Taiwan.
With respect for architecture of the past, the main idea was driven by elements in historic buildings that had a form of curved, wooden structure, prolonged canopies, and so on. The overall geometry was created as if it follows the beauty of nature. So, the ideas of the new cultural center capture that same beauty in an extended and cantilevered canopy with curved roof area. Its style and materials are generated from the traditional elements, as many Taiwanese would no doubt find and feel comfortable with the usual elements of their past.
As Taiwan is the place where very hot summer continues more than 5 months out of the year, a covered area is very much necessary in the region’s architecture. The inclined walls or “upside-down,” distorted-pyramid walls will create enough shade to allow use of the facilities underneath and shade pedestrian approach to building’s entrance. Furthermore, its wooden curved facade is clad to the internal structure system to avoid direct sunlight; the same interior structure is varyingly inclined to create unique spatial moments with the structure-facade system.
sP: What or who influenced this project?
TheeAe LTD.: “The creativity is the ability to introduce order of the randomness of nature.” — Eric Hoffer, philosopher.
sP: What were you reading/listening to/watching while developing this project?
TheeAe LTD.: Nothing, specifically, I am reading or listening. Just from various design studies by functions.
sP: Whose work is currently on your radar?
TheeAe LTD.: N/A. (There are many architects I like, not specifically one.)
