“My work aims to use painting and drawing as a medium expressive of the fluidity of identity. Representation and abstraction flow together, seamlessly intermingling, in a state of constant flux. I intend to explore both the terror and joy that comes with identity’s meltdown. The images hover between hallucination and careful formal abstraction. I try to achieve technical rigor while engaged in a visualization of intense subjective breakdown; maintaining a constant tension between control and chaos.
No self is singular and complete but always mutable, defining itself only relative to a complex environmental web. Personalities are based on social structures, inter-personal relationships, always taking and receiving. They constantly must reproduce themselves to maintain the illusion of stable personhood, but always do so imperfectly. My work aims to exacerbate this imperfection and make tangible the moments of flux that we gloss over to survive.” — Seth SCANTLEN
