    suckerPUNCH: Describe your project.

Joe BAILIN & Ted St GERMAIN (agents), Gabriel MORALES-OLIVARES (principal agent): How to allow for a material to compute (in)formation. Fluid forms should not be actualized by a non-fluid system.

In the application of a compound material the objective is to design without the use of a traditional framework commonly used in traditional applications of fluid materials, however still maintaining fluid materials ability to seamlessly and continuously build upon itself.

This series of prototypes was created using a mixture of thermoplastic and latex as a base material. Hot melt adhesive, a thermoplastic, is heated into a hot liquid pool and liquid latex is then folded into the mixture. This material can be mixed to specific proportions, as different ratios result in different densities and structural properties. Additionally, other materials such as dissolved ABS solution could be added to create unique behaviors.

Over the course of this study, the fitness criteria of the material was explored with the desire to create a self-supporting structure using minimal materials. It quickly became apparent that the thermoplastic alone was not enough to create substantial structure. In this matrix of heated thermoplastic, liquid latex vulcanizes, creating a marbled quality throughout the prototypes where it has been used. This allows the structure to resist greater loads. Additionally, it was found that manipulation of naturally forming air bubbles within the material provide localized structure as the material rapidly cools and surface area expands.
