“Studies in Factish Architecture: Ventilation Tower, Holland Tunnel, NYC.”
    critic: Ferda KOLATAN.
    teaching assistant: Rachael McCALL.

In this design studio the term factish (borrowed from Bruno Latour) was utilized to generate an architecture that deliberately blurs the lines between facts, fiction, and fetish. . . .

As these long-standing categorical separations dissolve under further scrutiny, contemporary views on what constitutes the “real” leave us with much stranger realities of fictionalized facts and factual fictions. In taking this position into the realm of architecture, the work seeks to reveal hidden potentialities of a large infrastructural building, which is primarily dealing with nonhuman scale, program, and function. The existing Holland Tunnel ventilation tower is an urban object, which attempts to fit into its context by mimicking residential features and by appealing to human access even though it ultimately forbids it. The new proposals on the other hand radically free the tower from any such harmonization and instead speculate on design expressions that result from the ventilations system’s mechanical architecture and its inherent strangeness in the context of the city of New York.
