  • Butcher.ed/Urban Housing

Angela HUANG & Alex TAHINOS, "Real Fictions II: Pier Gardens." Model.
    philadelphia PENNSYLVANIA

    University of Pennsylvania, PennDesign

    critic: Kutan AYATA.

    suckerPUNCH: Describe your project.
Mana SAZEGARA: Butchered proposes new sets of typologies for housing units.

These controversial morphologies are realized in a 70 feet extension structure added to the existing Stuyvesant Town housing complex. Stuyvesant Town
Located on the Lower East Side of Manhattan, is an expansive housing complex with identical post-war brick
blocks. As the history of the location might suggest, the whole critical concern of the project is to generate a
constructive dialogue between the old and new. Butcher.ed explores new aesthetics by breaking the typical and
institutional urban housings and adding new dynamic spatial qualities, and yet maintaining the genuine concept
behind the Stuyvesant Town in order to preserve the old and traditional fabric.

sP: What or who influenced this project?
MS: The idea of skeleton, organs, and skin in nature and how they are in direct conversation, yet holding three
    distinctive aesthetics always intrigues me.
On the other hand, art is a rich source of inspiration for me. While working on Butcher.ed I was inspired by
several artists; Bart Hess is one of them, whose projects bring me the question of form, material, and their
relationships in order to initiate new aesthetics.

sP: What were you reading/listening to/watching while developing this project?
MS: I listened to Bjork, Jazz, and Classical music. I watched Woody Allen Movies. I read Returning to (Strange) Object by David Ruy, The Quadruple Object by Graham Harman, and The First Bad Man by Miranda July.

sP: Whose work is currently on your radar?:
MS: Young & Ayata, Neil M. Denari Architects, SU11, Yayoi Kusama, Zarina Hashmi.
