  • Settlements

    Gideon SCHWARTZMAN, "Paper Thin." Model.
    montreal CANADA

    suckerPUNCH: Describe your project.
David UMEMOTO: These are pieces taken from my most recent exhibition “Settlements”, that was presented earlier this year at HUB in Melbourne and Sydney, Australia.

At the juncture of sculpture and architecture, these miniature pieces evoke temporary buildings or monuments standing on far-away lands. The walls rising towards nowhere, the curves running into ceilings, and the staircases leading into the void evoke remnants of modern cities having survived a cataclysm or fragments of Babylonian cities.

sP: What were you reading/listening to/watching while developing this project?
DU: Music: Philip Glass, Colin Stetson, Kraftwerk.

sP: Whose work is currently on your radar?:
DU: Enric Mestre, Renato Nicolodi, Juan Orti.
