    Re-envisioning UCLA’s Royce Hall
Architecturally, the center holds great significance within a building and power and iconicity within a building. If Royce Hall is a whole consisting of the sum of many parts, the auditorium is where “power” and iconicity is concentrated. Its sheer scale and location make it the building’s primary focus. The auditorium occupies the center, where the other parts (e.g. classrooms, offices, foyers, and lobbies) revolve and organize themselves around. The ambition for this project is to decentralize and redistribute the iconicity of the auditorium to diminish the normal hierarchies of Royce Hall, refocusing the building to the many instead of the one. This is executed by producing multiple levels of part and whole relationships that promote a new conception of the whole through the different sum of their parts.
The project pays close attention to the part and whole, and works to produce ambiguity at many levels. Firstly at the building scale, three masses unified by an elevated ground.
Second, the ground plane. The plane itself operates as another whole, yet is broken down by discrete parts (the strips). The third level of ambiguity can be read within both the form of the mass and the individual parts of the ground texture. For both the masses and the strips,  the rusticated edges are a means of emphasizing the discreteness of the parts that make up the greater whole.
With the thesis of redistribution of central iconcity, this project focuses attention on the parts, giving them greater importance to operate at a multitude of scales, to produce a greater whole.
