More thrashed rock by one of columbus’ finest, psychedelic horseshit. Bursting with spacey, layered jams including the sublime bleak vacations, a seven minute velvets like trip to the moon.

‘cherry cola, sno-cones and taffy” is how san fran rocker ty SEGALL describes his new lp for goner records. the songs still have plenty of hooks buried beneath layers of fuzz and reverb but cuts like casear show segall getting looser and mixing in some new twists.

oliver SCHARF’S debut lp year of panic is full of great bouncy lofi gems. Put out on brooklyn’s Captured Tracks this fits right in with the label’s other house partying throwback/throwaway acts. With plenty of noise and hooks it’s great for aimless summer afternoons.

david MAZZUCCHELLI, the brilliant illustrator of batman year one, city of glass, and rubber blanket, has put out his first full length original work – asterios polyp. The novel’s titular character, an architect who has yet to realize any of his speculative, highly theoretical work, is forced to reexamine his life and career following an accident which takes him from manhattan and ivy league teaching appointments to being a small town mechanic. Mazzuccheli experiments with a number of constantly shifting styles, color application, and drawing techniques to illustrate the story and push the boundaries of image and text’s relationship.

zola jesus’s stridulum ep does away with the obscuring lo-fi production to push nika DANILOVA’s booming voice out front. the trained opera singer form northern wisconsin uses her powerful instrument to push her driving, wailing dirges. the ep is particularly smooth sounding with no hiss or fuzz but rather clean vocals and plenty of pulsing moody textures below the surface. songs such as the sweeping “night” build from a synthy hum to a swirling pulsing soundtrack for the perfect foreboding late nite.

nice face’s immer etwas out on sacred bones delivers a nice solid punch with its fuzzed out distortion. full of plenty of energy and sinister swirls, the lp lets ian MAGEE show off his command of texturing noise, beats, and haunted vocals. the songs push straight ahead at a breakneck pace with no filler and plenty of trashy surf rock fun.

werner HERZOG’s bad lieutenant: port of call new orleans is full of debauchery, iguanas, lucky crack pipes, and a maniacally hilarious nicholas cage. nothing is more fun than cage’s dementedly cracked lieutenant who is quickly burying himself deeper into a depraved state. he is on the case of a multiple homicide when his hooker girlfriend played by eva mendes adds to his woes by getting him on the hook for $50k owed to some gangsters. HERZOG and cage are both one of a kind characters and likewise this debased procedural stands alone. “do fish have dreams?”

will foster’s guinea worms have an amazing 2-lp compilation out from columbus discount records. culled from the cdrs the guinea worms recorded over the last decade, this collection spills over with juicy cuts. plenty of loud tunes packed with catchy wordplay such as the scorcher “haymaker,” the meandering “come here baby,” the hilarious “accidental space tourist“and the lurching “maggot therapy.” as will foster sings “do the right thing. do the frank lloyd wright thing”
