  • SDA, PURE Tension.
    los angeles CALIFORNIA

Synthesis Design + Architecture (SDA), the forward-thinking Los Angeles-based architecture firm led by architect and USC professor, Alvin Huang, has recently won an international competition to design a rapidly deployable pavilion to showcase Volvo’s new plug-in electric hybrid, the V60.

Volvo’s “Switch to Pure Volvo” competition, organized by international architecture magazine THE PLAN, called for an innovative and original design for a temporary pavilion that expressed a “strong and creative identity” to showcase the car at fairs and open air presentations in Italian squares.

    suckerPUNCH: Describe your project.

Yoon HER: The book once stored all the knowledge, or authorship. However, in the 21st century, we no longer need tangible material—that is, the paperback book—to hold authorship. People are sharing ideas without noticing that he/she is violating one’s asset on their screen. Libraries were once the storage of authorship since books were incarnations of author’s original work. However, books no longer secure one’s authorship, and we need to think about how to preserve the idea of one’s originality.

  • Taichung City Cultural Center
    los angeles CALIFORNIA

“Cultural Ascent” is a design proposal for the Taichung City Cultural Center that merges the programs of a public library, fine arts museum, and city park into an iconic contemporary architectural landmark. The architectural intent of the building is to augment its programmatic contents by creating gradient spatial conditions through sectional movement, while utilizing variable façade patterning and articulation to register varying programmatic conditions.

  • Tensioned Relaxations
    los angeles CALIFORNIA

    suckerPUNCH: Describe your project.

Synthesis Design + Architecture (SDA): Tensioned Relaxations is series of temporary and rapidly deployable outdoor structures that aspire to reinvent the typical street fair tent through their combination of dynamic form, variable configurations, and optical effects. Each structure is highlighted by a uniquely sensual and continuous form composed of a tensioned HDPE Mesh skin with bespoke artwork by the talented roster of urban artists at SA Studios / SA-UP Collective and a perimeter ring made of fibreglass rod.

The 5th annual Dale Taylor Visiting Seminar at the University of Calgary Faculty of Environmental Design was led by Visiting Lecturer Alvin Huang (USC/Synthesis Design + Architecture) and Assistant Professor Jason S. Johnson (U. Calgary/Minus Architecture). This intensive 4 day design/fabricate/build workshop explored digital form-finding techniques to produce a series of scaled architectural prototypes for freestanding pavilion structures.

  • Informed Form
    los angeles CALIFORNIA

“Informed Form” is an ongoing research initiative that explores the relevance of form as a product of reciprocity between geometry (form), force (performance), matter (organization), and craft (fabrication). It extends the design research legacies of analogue form finding in the works of Otto, Gaudi, Isler, and Candela by exploring digital and analogue techniques for discovering form through variable material and geometric organizations and force simulations, while simultaneously considering the design opportunities being afforded by advances in computation and fabrication technologies.

  • Minimal Relaxation
    shanghai CHINA

The design of this temporary installation reinterprets the traditional Chinese garden to activate the roof terrace of the MoCA Shanghai as an undulating and responsive multi-layered landscape. The upper (canopy) layer simultaneously produces gradient spatial conditions and framed viewing portals which curate views of the surrounding hi-rise towers, while the lower (landscape) layer articulates a series of back-lit sculptural ground forms which subdivide the terrace and provide atmospheric effect through responsive color-changing LED lighting effects. Inspired by the work of Frei Otto, the entire project extends his body of design research into physical and digital form-finding processes for minimal surface structures through dynamic mesh relaxation techniques.
