In actuality, the event more often leaves a disproportionate amount of damage in its wake—environmentally, financially, and infrastructurally. The central problem of the Olympics is that while technology and culture continue to evolve, and while performative limits are transgressed each day, the fundamental nature of the event has remained stagnant.

    vivian BRATONE: The typology of the archive is suffering from the multitudinous ways in which we share information and knowledge today. The citadel-like archives of hard-to-access and deeply nested materials form a landscape that today’s society rarely needs to traverse. On a parallel downward trajectory is mankind’s link to his environment. Information overload has led to a virtual disorientation and on a larger scale, a decrease in territorial identity as the growth and development of our cities are increasing shaped by non-material fluxes.

    Ahylo and AUMstudio with OPO’Lab are pleased to announce the launch of the SPECULATIS workshop to be held July 10-17th , 2010, in Oporto, Portugal.
    SPECULATIS is a 1-week workshop that integrates seminars design and construction of a design piece through which participants can be introduced to and explore algorithmic design techniques and their integration with fabrication technologies and interactive and lighting systems. The platform of exploration intends to foster awareness on the potential of modulating relationships of light intensity with various environmental dynamic factors and their relationship to program in architectural space and landscapes at large providing an opportunity to rethink concepts of space and ambiance as generators of architectural and urban space – while learning and applying tools to fully realize them as products, objects, spaces or other entities.
