kim LAGERCRANTZ: In the beginning was light, then came dark. Light, dark. Natural, artificial. Static, moving. Symmetric, asymmetric. Perishable and eternal. It is by the duality of things that we experience life.

dave BANTZ: Singularity of mood or message can be dangerous for society. Allowing architecture to exude only one reading can erode a culture’s ability to grow, create, and tolerate change. This thesis attempts to shift from an architecture of meaning, to an architecture of interpretation, through the blurring, dissolution, and misrepresentation of the perception of an architectural figure.

donovan BALLANTYNE: By amplifying the tessellation and porosity of the geodesic dome I am giving the geodesic dome a face-lift.

This thesis looks to misconstrue the face of the geodesic dome by amplifying its unintentional, yet inherent esthetic, and monumental qualities. I am proposing to bring depth and discontinuity to a typology that has been about continuity and surface. A face with no ears, no eyes, and no nose is not a face. Similarly, a building with no face is not architecture.

SCIARC 2GBX Studio 2010 – Instructor: Elena Manferdini – “Intense Interiority and Ornate Enclosure”

    suckerPUNCH: describe your project.

dave BANTZ: Guided by studio instructors Elena Manferdini, Marcelo Spina, and Tom Wiscombe, our studio was thrown into an intensive month long scripting workshop.  After our workshop, we were encouraged to extrapolate and build from our respectable bank of scripting experiments adding consideration for program, context, and performance.  A crisp, patterned, and prism-like exterior shell encases a sinuous structural and circulation network, which in turn, supports more focused plastic interior volumes.

thorne RANSOM: the body has been used to determine a sense of proportions in relationship to units of measure and used to create the notion of scale.these are based on an ideal form of the body, describing what is beauty due to what is normal. this notion of beauty in the body comes from the larger worldview associated with classical western notions of the body in the way of anthropocentricity.

elena MANFERDINI : the installation explores the intricacies of lace at a scale far beyond the intimate size commonly associated with it. made by the knotting and intertwining of multiple threads, the dynamic dance of lace making is brought to the scale of the sci-arc gallery. the antique venetian merletti, the Italian term for lace, are the crenelations that create a complex interface at the top of defensive buildings. the project, which weaves itself along centenary supporting wires hung from above, engages the viewer at an intimate scale as the installation billows up through the space. walking in the gallery, the viewer can appreciate the detail of each element that constitutes the overall form.

in her architectural investigations as well as her graphic, product, and fashion designs, elena manferdini has established a language of both process and form that emanates throughout all of her work. the majority of her work deals with pattern and its manifestation in three dimensional form. similar to the classic tailoring problem of transforming sheet material to fit the curves of the human body, manferdini is constantly exploring patterns of perforation and the ways in which aperture can inhabit complex surfaces whether it be in a dress or a curtain wall.
