  • Augmented Fabrication
    lexington KENTUCKY

The Augmented Fabrication seminar focused on the design and prototyping of custom fabrication machines that combine digital precision with user skills/intuition. The projects began with research into specific techniques and equipment used in fabrication at a large and small scale to examine how these processes use a network of highly specific tools to achieve a complex result. Each team took one of these techniques and developed a machine that was used to fabricate their final installation. The machines are controlled by digital animations that give the designer a high degree of control over the output of the system. The individual pieces produced by the machines were then assembled into the final prototypes.

david VUONG, yuna KUBOTA, ivan RODRIQUEZ, & sheena OLIMPO: This studio was intended to investigate a composite wall system of focused material and fabrication process through formulation of a half scale mockup. As a group of four, we explored an intelligent concrete wall system of horizontal draping fabric forming method. The concrete panels were designed to maximize the unique characteristics of the fabric form concrete, which included flexibility and softness of fabric opposing to the permanence and hardness of concrete, varieties in the elasticity and permeability of different fabric types, and reusability of formwork.

    suckerPUNCH: Describe your project.

kristof CROLLA (LEAD), sebastien DELAGRANGE (LEAD), emmi KESKISARJA (EDGE), and pekka TYNKKYNEN (EDGE): The Dragon Skin Pavilion is an architectural installation designed and built for the 2011-12 Hong Kong & Shenzhen Bi-City Biennale of Urbanism\Architecture.

The Pavilion utilises a newly developed environmentally friendly material called “post-formable” plywood, which incorporates layers of adhesive film to allow easy single-curved bending without the need for steam or extreme heat. With no material loss, a CNC mill divided 21 of these 8×4 plywood sheets into eight identical squares, and accurately cut the unique connection slots that were programmed into the pavilion geometry by computer.

cmmnwlth (zoe COOMBES & david BOIRA): The Seltanica is a production light we originally developed for Wright Auction and Volume Gallery of Chicago. It appeared in their fall contemporary exhibit, ‘Truth in Form, Reason For Being’. It is a suspension lamp, cast in white Gypsum. Modeled via software generally used for the replication of animal skins and other such intricate surfaces, the piece is ultimately cast into a material that has over 5,000 years of use- White Gypsum. This attempt to relate the contemporary to the historical is common to most of our work.
