  • Pita & Bloom, "The New Zocalo." Model, detail.
    los angeles CALIFORNIA

The New Zocalo is an urban platform. A Mexican Spanish word for public plaza, like that at the center of Mexico City, zócalo is here defined as an elevated plinth. Hovering above street level and aligned with the adjacent rail yard, the plinth’s colorful textured paving traverses a series of gardens while broad oblique walkways connect formal and informal destinations.

    los angeles CALIFORNIA

    advisor: Florencia PITA

    suckerPUNCH: Describe your project.

Emily CHEN CHOI: Deep Facade is a thesis that privileges the façade as an architectural element and pushes the façade to become the entire architectural experience. Traditionally, a façade operates as a two dimensional element that indexes the building and establishes boundary. It is the threshold that separates the interior from exterior, indicating a change in experience as one approaches and enters a building. By thickening the facade to an extreme, Deep Facade challenges this traditional notion of a thin surface facade, thereby prolonging the cadence of entering a building and blurring the distinction between interior and exterior.

    suckerPUNCH: Describe your project.

Alex PHI: Typically, a monolithic structure is solid, unbroken, rigid, invulnerable, and whole. A true monolithic piece of architecture is large and unified with no recognizable parts. The investigation deals with displacing and dislodging both formal and organizational aspects of a building while retaining a sense of wholeness.

  • Florencia PITA/FPmod, Taichung City Cultural Center.
    los angeles CALIFORNIA

This proposal for the Taichung City Cultural Center is a singular, landmark building, which encompasses both the Taichung Public Library and the Taichung Fine Arts Museum. In response to Taichung City Government’s initiative to develop a notable entryway to Taichung Gateway Park, we propose a building that formally yields a “gateway” into the new park. Much like natural occurring openings between large rock formations, grand breezeways or tunnels are proposed to separate the two volumes of the library and museum. Through a series of studies and manipulations of historical archway precedents, a three-dimensional form of the tunnels was generated.

    suckerPUNCH: Describe your project.

Kyle ONAGA: The figure in architecture is neglected and feared. This thesis embraces the figure.
The exploration seeks an alternative starting point for architecture that does not originate from abstracted forms.
Using a literal figure as massing, the head is taken as the architectural primitive.

The figure in its nature, has apriori associations. In its reading, the figure creates an engagement.

    suckerPUNCH: Describe your project.

fernando HERRERA & jing meng FENG: The building comes together as a hybrid composition of aesthetic characteristics, a coalescence of contrarieties. The combination of distinctly different vocabularies alludes to the programatic versatility in the scope. The design strategy features a hard-edged shell that rests on a geometrically soft under-belly, and both components bear different texture qualities. These articulations of the envelope originated from a process of algorithmic outputs.
