tyler HILTON: what are you thinking about now?

nicholas DI GENOVA: i’m coming up with a theme around some facts of science, but more from the perspective of a naturalist from the industrial revolution, the golden age of the natural sciences… ah, that doesn’t really say much, i’m trying to put together large complex drawings based on science that is largely made up of myth and misinformation and religious oppression… to try to chart the natural world without a reliable basis of facts as a foundation… ah, man, these are new baby thoughts in my head. i need time to let them develop…

ink stained beasts battle in the online collaboration between illustrators zak smith, shawn cheng, and nicholas di genova. it is a battle of black ink on white fields in which hybridized creatures and worlds collide. each consecutive illustration builds on the one before it through an undulating narrative that merges the artists and their styles. with an identical palette and subject, the illustrators are able to develop new unique languages of detail within their scenes that becomes dependent on its adjacent illustrations. its a playful, reductive experiment in the development of new technique. “though not exactly an exquisite corpse, it will be exquisite, and there will be many corpses.”

twenty-six year old canadian artist, nicholas di genova decimates yesterday’s seamless future with an underworld teeming with torn feathers, scales, and the occasional ink stain. his drawings contain figures broken down by gradients of line, color, scale, and detail. the figures inhabit di genova’s mythology based on a post-apocalyptic world equally informed by evolution, greek mythology, and comic books. as he describes his cererbus to format magazine “ he marries the love of his life, which is a giant chicken with a gun for a head, but being a fifty-headed dog he has these urges so he makes babies with his wife and then he ends up fucking all his children and fucking all his grandchildren.”
