    pittsburgh PENNSYLVANIA

The architect is no longer an organizer of matter and space, but a designer of systems with multi-layered components and increasingly complex relationships. [En]Coding Architecture 2013 invites rising superstars, experienced researchers and designers to present experimental work derived through computational thinking and digital making. [En]Coding Architecture 2013 positions the field as an alloy of programming, digital tooling, art and science.

    cambridge MASSACHUSETTS

Pierre Hermé, widely considered as today’s foremost pastry chef, will expose three of his creations, retracing them from their original intuition to the elaboration of their flavors, textures, and formal manifestations, ultimately giving each its own character and ability to provide us with a new way of discovering the world.
. . . His work demonstrates a rigor and sensibility that have created a new grammar whose richness is in line with the growing interest in cross-disciplinary thinking in design fields—laying foundations of what can be called the Architecture of Taste.

the recent challenges of environmental science and activism have not been met by the architectural profession with innovative intellectual or imaginative propositions. and yet, it is the task of the design disciplines to discover new ways of understanding the human relationship to the environment, even ones that leave much of its past conventions behind. “ecological thinking” represents one such radical foundational departure, but it is one that should not be seen as foreign to the design disciplines, for it has everything to do with how forms are made and how they arrive in our midst.

  • far from equilibrum
    2008

actar: sanford KWINTER ponders the complex encounters between technology, culture, and architecture. critical essays offer an extended meditation on infrastructure, war, computation, mechanical and material intelligence, and other multivariate facets of modernity. far-reaching in scope, far from equilibrium amounts to a performance in writing of what kwinter describes as radical anamnesis: the imagination’s escape from the sterile logic of what is. compiling over a decade of architectural and critical writings, many published here for the first time, far from equilibrium is essential reading for anyone interested in the state of architecture and criticism today. a primer for (re)thinking design in the 21st century.
