    suckerPUNCH: Describe your project.

isaïe BLOCH / ERAGATORY: While the architectonic aesthetic may seem to revolve around a straightforward gimmick, the work is much richer than that. The more you look, the more you realize how many levels it operates on, from its allusions of architectural ruïnification/collapse as in the romantic era to its connections to our current culture of remixes and mash-ups.

Starting with the winter semester 2011/12 Hani Rashid will head the Studio Architekturentwurf (architectural design) 3 at the University of Applied Arts in Vienna.

Hani Rashid’s studio will focus on students working to develop conceptual, practical and critical skills and means for the making of new, compelling and forward thinking architecture. The studio focus will move between architecture as object to environment and phenomena. Operative terms in this studio include architecture as atmospheric experience, architecture as fetishized artifacts, architecture and new forms of dwelling and being, and architecture as an aesthetic, philosophical and metaphysical experience.

hend ALMATROUK: How does one rethink an opera? There is no lack in ambition. But more often than not ambition becomes pretentious. The constant all consuming urge for innovation can be destructive and self serving. But there is no mistaking the impact of creative processes fuelled by these seemingly undesirable traits . To dissect the traditional opera, gnawing away at the foundations of the sacred opera house till that threshold is reached when the heirarchies are disintegrated, when the instrument becomes the artist, and artist the facilitator.

Through the work of FreelandBuck, ‘Eine heiße Viertelstunde’ will document an architectural formalism that combines the complex continuity of topological surfaces and the articulation of tectonics. Enabled by the precise modulation of computation, the firm’s work at the scales of installations, interiors, buildings and infrastructure aims to catalyze a contemporary yet multiplicitous mode of formal continuity: pattern.

    bika REBEK:
“Panama Supercharge” is an architectural dialogue between mass and fragility, expressed as thin patterned developable surfaces out of metal sheets and heavy masses out of raw concrete.

stephan SOBL: The epitome of a Hypostyle Hall in my project is a field of massive and fragile columns that define a variation of spatial and volumetric interiors of the terminal. Denser areas of the field create intimate spaces and become areas to rest whereas less dens areas are circulation routes and contain architectural program.

xin-yu WAN: As a project to replace St. Stephen Cathedral in Vienna, the overall concept is based on a fantasy about the architectural history of Vienna. That is to say: if Art Nouveau had had a greater influence and had lasted for a longer period in Vienna; if the articulated geometries not only work as ornaments or enclosure as is the case for the Secession, but also serves as real structure to hold the main parts of the building, what would a new cathedral be and what its sublime and magical effects.

stefan RITTER: The project’s architectural effects are based on three distinct surface qualities (clad solids, screened semi solids, and exposed trusses) which are composed over a geometric system with a strong tectonic expression. The consequence is a tension of simultaneous perception of surface figures juxtaposed with geometric volumes. The architecture becomes an esthetical experience of oscillating volumetric readings throughout the spaces of the building.

lindsey COHEN: This project is about re-examining the way a cathedral is typically experienced. It takes the traditionally flat, horizontal circulation and verticalizes it, allowing users to participate more fully in the space of the cathedral. Instead of being overwhelmed by the grand scale of the cathedral from the ground, visitors inhabit the space and can move vertically through it.
