    Virginia MELNYK: The “Y” proposal uses a simple component in the shape of a small branch or the letter “Y”. This single unit is connected together at the ends allowing it to expand and grow to fill the window front. Using L systems to generate a growth with in a constrained bounding box shaping y to fill the box until the growth has exhausted all options.

    virginia MELNYK: The american city has become littered with vacant lots. These spaces leave a emptiness, and become a place that people try to avoid. Rainbow Ropes, attempts to reactivate these types of spaces by building an infrastructure for play. Rainbow Ropes becomes a playground for children and adults alike, he conic shapes and tunnel like forms are inviting for people to climb inside. The web like structure is made of rope woven between structural steel frameworks. This rope can be soft and comfortable to climb, sit, and lounge on. Open to the fresh air, the density of the rope filters light to shade inhabitants as they lounge inside. Rainbow Ropes intends to reactivate dead spaces in the city and create place where everyone can come together and feel young again.

    virginia MELNYK: The Ribbon folly is a design proposal for an urban folly. Unlike a typical folly located in a rolling english garden the Ribbon folly is surrounded by urban fabric. Therefore its design, instead of mimicking greek or historical architectural styles as traditional follie does. The Ribbon folly takes the approach to mimic nature and the formations of fluid formations. The swooping pavillion is created by the agglomeration of a singular flowing pattern. The pattern is made from the folding of a continuous sheet of veneer wood.

    tiffany DAHLEN and virginia MELNYK: The urban night club responds to the vibrant and eclectic youth culture of Harajuku and balances the high end fashion of Omontesando. The urban club consists of a large meet and greet entry area, sushi restaurant, sake bar, music lounge and two VIP lounges;  Pockets of unique intensities are held within a white framework, creating zones of spatiality, surficiality, and crenalation. Five distinct qualities corresponding to the specific programs and aesthetic desires, transform between the different spaces through the medium of the framework and are embedded within it. They differ from a sweet salivating sushi restaurant to a soft pillowy lounge space.
