suckerPUNCH: Describe your project.
Springchallenge 2012: IOA SPRING CHALLENGE is an international design workshop intended for architecture students interested in exploring digital design techniques/fabrication within the teaching environment of the Institute of Architecture at the University. The installation is the result of a one week workshop with international students, hosted by the University of Applied Arts in Vienna under the guidance of Andrei Gheorghe and Bence Pap.
The work is fully parametrically designed via Grasshopper and the structural plugin Karamba, developed at the Universities Institute and Bollinger+Grohmann engineers. The cellular structure of the installation varies its cell-properties in shape and density, responding to the structural forces of the suspended structure. The minimal surface spanning about 6 m is triangular in shape, funneling to in inverse oculus at its lower part and is suspended in one of the Universities galleries.
sP: What or who influenced this project?
Springchallenge 2012: The desire to build.
sP: What were you reading/listening to/watching while developing this project?
Springchallenge 2012: As it was an international collaboration, and so a lot of tastes and styles accumulated into different musical endeavors keeping us awake the nights, I can clearly remember the usual “architect’s drive” of Aphex Twin, but also good mixes by John Talabot, Moved D . . . and, yes, Soul Clap, of course!
sP: Whose work is currently on your radar?
Springchallenge 2012: projects like Zaha’s Heydar Aliyev Centre in Baku that contribute stunning and mesmerizing results to the field.
