suckerPUNCH: describe your project.
michael SZIVOS + jose GONZALEZ: we were commissioned by stiletto to contribute 6 pages for their winter 08/09 issue. the title of the issue is utopies and the magazine’s editor, laurence benaïm, asked us to respond to the topic of utopia with digital images created using six featured shoes designed by prada, miu miu, jil sander, dior, louis vuitton, and céline. we wanted to do something fantastical and simple so we started by looking at the work of superstudio. for each image we created a landscape or environment made of attenuated tiles.
as we began to digitally model the shoes we realized that they were extremely complex and had very organic qualities not unlike a city or a building. we “grew” clusters of the shoes using simple mathematical models and chose the models that best fit each landscape. we then populated the environments with shoe clusters and adjusted the tiles to accept the shoes. the whole time we were working we tried to imagine how superstudio would respond using today’s representational tools, not just formally but conceptually. we wanted the images to work as a version of utopia, but also as propaganda for the extreme nature of luxury consumerism. we imagined the shoe as a singular manifestation of “beauty” and the cities as hyper clusters of beauty. the landscape is meant to be infinitely extensive and very polished as if it is taking over the world at the expense of displaying an intense moment of beauty. we had a lot of fun with the project and thank stiletto for giving us complete freedom.
