a landmark manifesto on modern architecture written by robert VENTURI for the moma. he described it as “a gentle manifesto for nonstraightforward architecture.” hundreds of projects from the baroque, rococo, mannerist, and modern periods are discussed and presented in over 350 photographs. the book also serves as a great piece of writing addressing architecture and its formal ambitions and achievements without being bogged down by social, environmental, and other peripheral concerns to form. venturi write,“i try to talk about architecture and not around it. the architects ever diminishing power and his growing ineffectualness in shaping the whole environment can be reversed, ironically, by narrowing his concerns and concentrating on his own job… i accept what seem to me architecture’s inherent limitations, and attempt to concentrate on the difficult particulars within it rather than the easier abstractions about it.”
